Christian Organic Food VA

Joel Salatin is an iconic Christian organic food VA farmer. He is, in fact, a poster boy for growing meat organically, and has written a book, Holy Cows and Hog Heaven: The Food Buyer’s Guide to Farm Friendly Food.

Salatin isn’t the only Christian organic food VA farmer, but he may be the most outspoken one. He insists that food choices help create the world of tomorrow, whether the choices are made by the farmer or the consumer.

Most Christian organic food VA farmers raise vegetables because it’s difficult and costly to certify animals as organic. Joel Salatin eschews government certification of his eggs and meat, but his animals are grown organically, and without the high cost of growing most organic meat, and without any pesticides or soil enrichers.

Salatin’s farm, Polyface farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, is an example of a completely self-contained ecology. Vegetable farmers rotate their crops to improve the soil. On Polyface Farm, the animals are rotated on the pastures to improve the soil. Cows, chickens, sheep, pigs and other animals take their turn, each taking what it needs and leaving the soil richer afterward. His rotation method makes his farm 15 times more productive than other farms of the same size.

What is “Christian” organic food production? Nothing special, really. It’s just organic food production by Christians. But for those who are Christian organic food VA farmers, it is something special. It’s a way of living out their faith, of taking care of the piece of earth they are responsible for, and producing organic food that is good for people.

Of course, not all organic farmers are Christians. For some farmers, however, organic farming is a natural expression of their Christian faith. They feel a responsibility to care for the earth and for other people, and feel that organic farming is the best way to do that.
